LA SCALA season 2005
Scala di Milano
Via Filodrammatici 2
Teatro degli Arcimboldi, Viale dell'Innovazione
20121 Milan, Italy
Opera
There are three things that make people misty-eyed over their holiday in Milan: the magnificent gothic Duomo cathedral, great shopping, and the world-famous 18th century lyric theatre, La Scala. The very best performers, musicians, directors and scene designers put on an unforgettable show in an amazing theatre, and every première is a major event, attended by the rich and famous, the gossip-hunters and paparazzi, and the simply star-struck, everyone wanting to know who’s with who (and who's wearing what). Opera-lovers may be disappointed this season, however: the baroque theatre is closing down for renovation in January, to be temporarily replaced by a specially-built venue, the Teatro Degli Arcimboldi. But don't panic: it may lack some of La Scala’s historical charm, but the set design, the luxury and the quality of the performances will be exactly the same. The new season offers a variety of the greatest Italian operas, as well as masterpieces by Beethoven, Strauss, Verdi. Puccini, prima ballerina Alessandra Ferri are just a few of the legendary names involved in bringing to life classic operatic tragedy like Tosca, Fidelio, La Bohème, Der Rosenkavalier, I Due Foscari. There's something for every taste, including some exhilarating balletic performances where even Sylvie Guillem makes an appearance but beware: these tickets are in high demand and sell out almost before being on sale. Try to book at least 5 or 6 weeks before the show date.
